Where is the company based?

Skypark, Finnieston, Glasgow. We are head tenant on a 2000sq.ft creative workspace which we share with ten other SME's. It's a great way for us all to have a fantastic office space (with great views) and network / be part of a bigger scene.

How did the business get started?

It started as an idea at Glasgow School of Art where Philip Ross (my business partner) and I met. We patented the Safehinge product and spun out into a company. We started working around a kitchen table, but now supply into over 50% of UK local authorities and are market leaders in safety products for doors!

  • Scottish Enterprise - £50k+ grant over various projects, recommended by advisor.
  • DSL - £30k loan recommended by accountant.
  • UKSE - £130k loan, equity . Recommended by advisor.
  • Youth Business Scotland - £30k loan. Recommended through networking.

Becoming market leader having started from nothing. We've been involved in some great projects including the Olympic Swimming Pool in London, Manchester City FC training ground, not to mention 100's of schools around the UK.

What are the company's plans for the next 3 years?

To continue growth. We've just launched into the Mental Health sector and are seeing some major opportunities here. We just supplied our first project to Bupa, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Tips for other businesses

"I would recommend engaging with the various agencies/advisors that are active in Scotland. They can signpost relevant funders to you and make introductions. It's also important to allow sufficient time for funding to be agreed and drawn down. Due diligence can take longer than expected and so the business needs to look ahead and account for that in its budgeting."
