Derek Maclean is a specialist painter and decorator providing a range of domestic interior design services, including painting and decorating, restorative plasterwork, wall linings and wallcoverings, specialist paint finishes, and full interior design sourcing and staging.

Having first engaged with Business Glasgow in November 2025, Derek worked closely with Business Adviser Alan Telford as he prepared to launch his new business in June 2026.

Through one-to-one support, including face-to-face meetings, telephone discussions and research sessions, Derek was guided through each stage of developing his business plan. Working at a pace that suited his timeline, Alan helped Derek understand the planning process, carry out the necessary research and shape a business plan tailored to his services and approach.

This included documenting his specialist interior work through practical before-and-after examples, helping to demonstrate the range and quality of services Derek planned to offer.

By January 2026, Derek had completed the research and planning required to finalise his business plan and apply for grant funding. He subsequently received a £500 Business Start-Up Grant. The funding has helped Derek purchase essential equipment for his practical work, while also providing funds to support local marketing activity. This has helped make some of the initial costs of establishing the business more manageable and supported Derek as he began trading.

Derek found the support from Business Glasgow to be a positive and valuable learning experience. He particularly appreciated Alan’s knowledge, patience and encouragement throughout the process, which helped build his understanding and confidence as a new business owner.

Alongside one-to-one advice, Derek also took part in Business Gateway webinars, which provided opportunities to develop his knowledge while connecting with other entrepreneurs going through the process of starting a business.

With his business now launched, Derek is continuing to establish his presence in the local market and build his specialist painting, decorating and interior design services.
