Named after our beloved city "Glaschu" - the Dear Green Place, Greencity Wholefoods, an ethical wholesaler based in Dennistoun, continues to honour its roots by taking bold steps towards sustainability.
Founded in 1978, Greencity has grown from humble beginnings - splitting sacks of peas and lentils - to become a thriving worker co-operative of 54 members. Democratically run, every staff member has a voice and a vote in how the business operates. Their commitment to fairness, respect, and co-operative values has made them a cornerstone of ethical business in Glasgow.
Greencity's latest green initiative of installing solar PV panels on their warehouse roof was made possible thanks to insights from a detailed Carbon Baseline Report, which played a key role in securing support through Glasgow City Council's Green Business Grant.
Scott Erwin, Business Development Manager, said:
We are always trying to adapt and become greener. We want to be able to future-proof ourselves for future generations.
Profitability in an industry like ours is not massive to start with, so adding an extra £60,000 into the mix to cover energy costs negates our ability to reinvest and grow the business. The Green Grant has helped us take a big step forward.
With energy bills rising five-fold, the grant has helped Greencity mitigate costs and reinvest in their mission. The carbon baseline report revealed that additional solar panels could reduce the company's emissions by 7%, equivalent to 7,784 car miles, and save over £3,500 annually - with further income generated via the Smart Expo Guarantee for the use of solar panels.
Greencity's green journey doesn't stop at solar. Previous initiatives like LED lighting, E-trike deliveries, and fruit and veg circularity, are all contributing to a more sustainable operation.
Greencity have embraced environmental issues since they were incorporated in 1978.
We were delighted to support them to reduce their energy use and carbon emissions.
Greg Sinclair, Glasgow City Council Business Adviser
I'd recommend applying for Glasgow City Council's Green Business Grant, especially if you own your own building.
By making the move to solar panels, we will be able to reinvest more into the business.
